Questions & Answers
What is BOB?
BOB is an acronym for Breathing Observation Bubble and the most exciting way to experience the marvels of the sea. It works just like the bell theory, we all learned in school. When you turn a glass upside down in a sink of water and push down, no water enters the glass because the glass is full of air. This is the same concept with the Bob unit. Air is constantly being fed into the bubble as we lower you, a seal is formed allowing you to breath freely inside the bubble.
How does BOB work?
BOB works under the simple properties of air and water pressure. Air is a gas which is a form of matter and air exerts pressure. Therefore, if you were to take a glass and invert it upside down and submerge into water, the effect of the air pressure creates an invisible seal. BOB allows you to breath freely inside the bubble the same way as would in the open air. The only difference is that your air is being provided by a scuba air tank that free flows constantly into your bubble.
Will the BOB scooters ever tip over?
Because each BOB has two opposing forces, the scooters will never tip over. There is 110 pounds of buoyancy produced by the bubble which is counteracted by the weight on the bottom of the scooter. This creates a neutral environment which allows the scooters to glide smoothly through the water.
Who is able to do the BOB tour?
Virtually anyone in good physical shape can easily operate the BOB scooters. It is necessary for the individual to be at least 4 tall and 10 years of age. We require that everyone interested in the tour complete a participant questionnaire and liability release form.
Do I need to know how to swim?
There is no experience necessary and you do not need to know how to swim to participate. Our highly trained and certified divers are with you at all times to ensure your safety and comfort. From the initial mounting of the BOB scooters, throughout the entire guided tour and up to exiting the scooters at the end of the tour, you will never be alone.
How deep will I be under the water?
Each BOB scooter is attached to a floating buoy that moves with you throughout the tour. The attached line between the buoy and the scooter is approximately 7 feet long so you will never be any deeper than 7 feet to 8 feet. Keep in mind that the standard deep end of a residential swimming pool is 10 feet so this is easy!
Is BOB environmentally friendly?
Approved by the roatan marine park, we are big supporters of a healthy environment and the BOB emits no emissions whatsoever. The unit is not propelled by an engine, but is powered by a 12-volt battery.
Can I wear glasses or contact lenses?
Since you are inside the bubble, glasses or contact lenses are not a problem.
